Sony Hints At Official PS3 External HDD
While many PS3 gamers have added their own substantial hard drives with Sony's blessing, there has never been an official peripheral offered by the company.
But that could change in the future -- Sony is looking at putting more choice in consumers' hands.
"We launched with 60GB and to reduce the price we went to 40GB. We're not sure we want to stay with that configuration of hard drive, and I think what you're going to see in the future is maybe consumers can choose," SCEE head David Reeves said in an interview with Eurogamer.
"The PlayStation will stay the same, but consumers can choose whichever size of hard drive they want. They can now, or course, because it's not a proprietary hard drive," he continued.
So what is the company thinking of for down the road?
"It might be that we will offer the possibility for people to have a bigger HDD, but they have that option now. But it does not mean that we have anything in the works to introduce a different model or bigger hard drive built in," Reeves confided.
In the meantime, there's a great tutorial over at CNET for do-it-yourselfers who want to add their own hard drives.
